School Office Clerk & IESW/EA info sessions April 15
Surrey Community College is hosting two information sessions on Monday, April 15, for those interested in pursuing school clerical and education assistant roles through district training programs.
Hosted at the Surrey Schools Resource Education Centre, the sessions include information on the School Office Clerk Certificate at 6 p.m., followed by the Education Assistant Diploma session at 7 p.m. These quality training programs reflect the demands of the workforce industry and prepare students to gain employment and achieve personal and career growth.
Launched last September, the School Office Clerk Certificate program (12 weeks, runs three times per year) focuses on the technical and interpersonal skills needed to work effectively in a school office environment. Led by longtime district clerical supervisor Deb Evans, the course teaches office management and practices, emergency preparedness, professional writing, basic bookkeeping, Office 365, resumé and interview techniques, and Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIPPA) procedures. Upon successful completion, students will have a solid understanding of what it is like to work as an office clerk in an elementary or secondary school.
Running for more than 15 years, the Education Assistant Diploma program (five months, runs twice per year) prepares students to work as EAs and inclusive education support workers (IESWs) alongside classroom teachers, supporting children and adolescents with diverse abilities and educational support needs. EAs and IESWs are a crucial asset to the education system and play a key role in the success of these children and youth.
Both information sessions will provide valuable insights into the curriculum, admissions and career opportunities of the programs. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions to district staff, including course instructors.
