Policy 9480 - Substance Abuse Prevention & Intervention

INTENT

The Surrey Board of Education is committed to creating safe and healthy learning environments. The board supports efforts designed to prevent and intervene in substance abuse among students. These efforts include the development and delivery of educational resources, the promotion of prevention programs, and the implementation of school and community-based efforts aimed at supporting students known to have involvement with alcohol or illicit substances.

POLICY

Possession, consumption, distribution, or use of alcohol or drugs at any school function is prohibited and contrary to school and district codes of conduct, and is therefore subject to disciplinary action as per established board policy and criminal code investigation by the RCMP.

3. 

DEFINITIONS

For the purposes of this document:
Alcohol” is any beverage containing alcohol, including beer, wine, cider and spirits;
Drugs” as referred to in the Controlled Drugs & Substances Act are “substances, the possession of which is prohibited under the Controlled Drugs & Substances Act, or anything which contains such a drug or substance or any drug or substance designated a restricted drug under the Food and Drug Act, unless the person possessing or consuming the restricted drug was authorized under that Act to possess the drug”;
School function” includes any assembly, meeting, or gathering of students, or student field trips for school purposes under the supervision or direction of the Board, representatives of the Board, teaching staff, supervisory staff, or authorized volunteers in the courses of their duties;
Staff” refers to employees of the school district or authorized volunteers.
