Procedure 5205.1 - School Crosswalk Guards/Patrols

1.

Employed Adult Crossing Guards

a)
Requests for the employment of adult school crossing guards shall be submitted to the Municipal Traffic & Safety Committee for consideration and recommendation. If a positive recommendation is made, such guards may be employed on the authority of the assistant secretary-treasurer.
b)
The placement of adult crossing guards is subject to an annual review by the assistant secretary-treasurer prior to the beginning of each school year.
c)
Upon a recommendation by the Municipal Traffic & Safety Committee, the assistant secretary-treasurer may approve the removal of adult crossing guard services.

2.

Pupil or Adult Volunteer School Crossing Patrols

a)
Schools may form pupil or adult volunteer school crossing patrols only within already marked crosswalks and where the approval of the assistant secretary-treasurer has been secured.
b)
All requests for crosswalks at or near schools must be made in writing to the Municipal Traffic Engineer or the Municipal Traffic and Safety Committee, who will then consider such requests. If a subsequent and supportive recommendation is made, the school affected may be required to establish a pupil or adult volunteer school patrol.
c)
Notwithstanding the aforementioned process, withdrawal of pupil or adult volunteer school crossing patrol services cannot take place without the prior written consent of the assistant secretary-treasurer.
d)
Where pupil school crossing patrols have been formed, the school may provide appropriate recognition as often as semi-annually. The organizing of such recognition programs will be left up to the individual schools concerned. The school district will contribute toward the cost of up to $7.50 per pupil school crossing patrol member participating in the activity organized as recognition. The school district will pay the cost of a bus where required and the prior approval of the assistant secretary-treasurer has been received.
