Policy 2920 - Trustees' Remuneration and Benefits


1.

PURPOSE

1.1. Trustees serve as representatives for the public education sector, functioning as a link between the community and the education system. 
1.2. The Surrey Board of Education recognizes the necessity of attracting and retaining qualified individuals from the broader community for this essential public service, and is committed to providing an environment that fosters inclusivity, and values openness, fairness and diversity of identity, thought and expression. 
1.3.The Board acknowledges the significance of the school trustee role and considers it reasonable for trustees to be compensated for their service to the district. 
1.4.The Board also understands the importance of trustees staying informed and enhancing their skills continually.

PHILOSOPHY

2.1. The complete trustee remuneration package should reflect the duties and obligations carried out by the entire Board, individual trustees, and the time dedicated to fulfilling their roles. 
2.2. The trustee remuneration package offered for trustees is comprised of per annum honoraria, and other benefits outlined in Procedure 2920.1 Trustees’ Remuneration and Benefits.

3.

TRUSTEES’ HONORARIUM 

3.1. Trustees' honorarium will be established annually to align with the school district's fiscal year, specifically, from July 1 to June 30 of the subsequent year.
3.2. Acknowledging the increased responsibilities of the chairperson and vice-chairperson, their honorarium will be set at higher rates than the base rate.
