Policy 1100 - Corporate Purpose & Responsibility of the School Board
1. | PURPOSE1.1. | This policy outlines the corporate purpose and responsibility of the Board of Education of School District No. 36 (Surrey). |

2. | CORPORATE PURPOSE2.1. | The corporate purpose of the Board of Education is to provide governance for the Surrey School District. This includes: | a) | Providing equitable access to educational experiences for all students. | b) | Ensuring all learners have the opportunity to develop their individual potential and to acquire the knowledge, skills, and competencies as outlined in the British Columbia Curriculum. | c) | Governing the school district according to the legislative requirements in the School Act. |
| 2.2. | The Board directs responsibility to the Superintendent of Schools to develop a strategic plan, and to report on the progress towards achieving the goals in the strategic plan through the annual Enhancing Student Learning Report. |

3. | RESPONSIBILITIES3.1. | In addition to fulfilling all statutory obligations, the responsibility of the Board is to represent the community by:a) | Establishing policies, ensuring implementation, and evaluating the results. | b) | Establishing decision-making structures, allocating general responsibilities, and evaluating performance. | c) | Acting as a final appeal body on district matters. |

In carrying out its responsibilities, the Board acts corporately, but trustees exercise independent judgment in representing the interests of the community. |
