Policy 1100 - Corporate Purpose & Responsibility of the School Board


1. 

PURPOSE

1.1.   
This policy outlines the corporate purpose and responsibility of the Board of Education of School District No. 36 (Surrey).

2.  

CORPORATE PURPOSE

2.1.    
The corporate purpose of the Board of Education is to provide governance for the Surrey School District. This includes:
a)Providing equitable access to educational experiences for all students.
b)Ensuring all learners have the opportunity to develop their individual potential and to acquire the knowledge, skills, and competencies as outlined in the British Columbia Curriculum.
c)Governing the school district according to the legislative requirements in the School Act.
2.2.    
The Board directs responsibility to the Superintendent of Schools to develop a strategic plan, and to report on the progress towards achieving the goals in the strategic plan through the annual Enhancing Student Learning Report.

3. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

3.1.    
In addition to fulfilling all statutory obligations, the responsibility of the Board is to represent the community by:
a)Establishing policies, ensuring implementation, and evaluating the results.
b)Establishing decision-making structures, allocating general responsibilities, and evaluating performance.
c)Acting as a final appeal body on district matters.
In carrying out its responsibilities, the Board acts corporately, but trustees exercise independent judgment in representing the interests of the community.
