Winter Reading 2021: Great K-3 books for the holidays!

It's winter break, and what better way to relax and pass the time than to get in some fun reading over the holidays!

We're kicking off our winter reading series with several recommendations for kindergarten to Grade 3 students from Douglas Elementary teacher-librarian Jody Wilson here's what's on her list for younger students this winter break.

Cake by Sue Hendra, illustrated by Paul Linnet

Cake is over the moon to be invited to his first party and takes every effort to make sure he looks his best. Of course, all of the party attendees are thrilled when he arrives. Will cake realize in time that he is there to be eaten? A great story for making predictions, this hilarious book will be one your child asks to read over and over.

Finding Wild by Megan Wagner Lloyd, illustrated by Abigail Halpin

"What is wild? And where can you find it?" Two girls on an urban walk discover the beauty of nature that surrounds them, reminding us that we do not need to look beyond our backyard to explore and experience the wonder of nature. Rich, descriptive language and vivid illustrations make this is an inspiring book to read with your child before heading out on a walk or a hike.

The Smart Cookie by Jory John, illustrated by Pete Oswald

Smart Cookie does not feel?smart. She takes longer to answer questions and compares herself to the other cupcakes and rolls in the bakery. In a moment of self defeat, she writes a confessional poem entitled "My Crumby Days" and discovers she is talented at writing poetry. A lighthearted story that reminds children that we are all "smart" in our own ways and to celebrate differences.
