Transit Police launch Blue Eagle Community Cadets program at A.H.P. Matthew Elementary
The Metro Vancouver Transit Police are expanding their Blue Eagle Community Cadets program, offering the Indigenous-focused youth program at Surrey's A.H.P. Matthew Elementary on Thursday evenings, starting with an open house on Jan. 27.
Launched in 2021, the program is a partnership with the Vancouver Police Department's Diversity, Inclusion and Indigenous Relations Section, the Aboriginal Policing Centre, the Surrey RCMP, the Ministry of Children and Family Development and Surrey Schools. The program is free for youth aged 12 to 15 of all backgrounds and provides opportunities to develop leadership skills while learning about Indigenous culture and policing in a safe and supportive environment.
Students and parents can learn more about the program at an open house at A.H.P. Matthew Elementary (13367 97 Ave.) on Thursday, Jan. 27 from 5-7 p.m.
Under the leadership of Const. Kirk Rattray, students will have an opportunity to:
- work in a team environment
- help their community
- explore various career options
- take part in a variety of activities
- strengthen physical and mental health
- meet strong Indigenous role models
- increase physical fitness and confidence
Participants must reside in Metro Vancouver and attend school full time. Students should also be interested in learning about different aspects of policing, be motivated to learn new skills and welcome new challenges, and willing to be an active and respectful participant.
The program will run Thursday evenings from 5-7 p.m. at A.H.P. Matthew Elementary. Registration is free. To apply, download the application and email Kirk.Rattray@transitpolice.bc.ca
