Surrey Schools remembers fallen workers on Day of Mourning
April 28 marks the International Day of Mourning, an annual day to honour and commemorate workers who have lost their lives to work-related incidents or occupational disease.
In recognition, Surrey and White Rock schools, as well as district buildings, will fly their flags at half-mast, in remembrance of workers who have been killed or injured on the job.
In 2023, 175 workers in B.C. lost their lives to workplace injury or disease.
“This day reminds us of how precious life is as we remember those who have lost their lives while simply doing their jobs,” said Laurie Larsen, Chair of the Surrey Board of Education. “The health and safety of our students and staff remains a top priority for the district and we continue in our commitment to ensuring safe workplaces for everyone.”
On Friday at 7:30 a.m., Day of Mourning BC is hosting a ceremony in Surrey at the City of Surrey Operations Centre (6651 148 St.). Additional ceremonies are being held in the following neighbouring communities on Sunday, April 28:
- Vancouver: Jack Poole Plaza, 1055 Canada Pl. (livestream available at dayofmourning.bc.ca)
- Delta: Rotary Park, 4500 Clarence Taylor Cr.
- New Westminster: Westminster Pier Park, 1 Sixth St.
