The Surrey Board of Education is reminding members of the community to engage thoughtfully and respectfully with trustees, staff and others when attending monthly public board meetings and other district and school events.

At the June 15 board meeting, Chair Laurie Larsen read a statement encouraging parents, guardians, students and staff to provide their input through open and constructive dialogue. The statement is in response to recent instances that involved disrespectful comments, hateful rhetoric and misinformation from select attendees at recent board meetings, as well as district-based community events.

“Our board has a responsibility in ensuring a safe environment for everyone present,” said Larsen. “We welcome diverse perspectives and encourage respectful and meaningful exchanges that contribute to the betterment of our schools.

“We also ask that all individuals present show courtesy and respect. Disagreements are natural, but they should be expressed in a civil manner, free from personal attacks, threats or harassment.”

Larsen noted the board will not tolerate behaviour that violates standards of conduct or compromises anyone’s safety and well-being. Any instances of harmful behavior or language, including inappropriate questions and comments at board meetings, will be halted promptly and with appropriate action. Attendees who violate the guidelines may be warned by the board, removed from meetings or events or, if required, referred to appropriate authorities. Individuals may also be restricted from attending future district and school events. These guidelines apply to all school and district-based community events.

Board Policy #2400 states under Section 7, “The school board expects all persons attending meetings of the school board to conduct themselves in a respectful manner.” The policy endorses the B.C. Human Rights Code and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, supporting freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, balanced with the board’s commitment to human rights free of discrimination based on Indigenous identity, race, colour, ancestry, place of origin, religion, marital status, family status, physical or mental disability, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or age.

“Our board is united in promoting respect, empathy, and understanding for all individuals,” said Larsen. “We will not tolerate any form of hate speech, discrimination or attempts to spread misinformation that undermines the rights and well-being of all members of our school communities, including members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community.”

Larsen added that a safe and respectful environment is important to foster meaningful discussion that is beneficial for everyone in our school communities, and invited community members to join the board in upholding these fundamental principles.

“Our board, district staff, administrators, educators and support staff will continue to ensure that our district is a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment for every member of our community, regardless of race, culture, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression,” she said. “It is our responsibility to ensure every school and district site is a safe space for students and staff.

“We prioritize the well-being of our community and will take appropriate steps against any form of harassment, discrimination, or bullying.”
