Surrey & White Rock students win 31 awards in BC/Yukon Virtual Science Fair

Surrey students had a great showing at this year's BC/Yukon Virtual Science Fair, with 21 students taking home 31 awards, including 14 provincial awards, 16 divisional awards and one special award.

Nearly half of the district's winners were students from SAIL (14), followed by Fraser Heights Secondary (6), Semiahmoo Secondary (5), Cougar Creek Elementary (3), Queen Elizabeth Secondary (2) and Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary (1).

SAIL students Patrick Cioata and Nathan Yeung are among five Surrey students from the BC/Yukon Virtual Science Fair who were selected as finalists for the 2021 Canada Wide Science Fair.

Five Surrey students from the BC/Yukon Virtual Science Fair were named 2021 Canada Wide Science Fair finalists:

  • Timothy Cai, Fraser Heights Secondary - An Investigation into Active Control for Accessible Orbital Flight - Senior
  • Robin Yadav, Queen Elizabeth Secondary - Wildfire Drone Automation Using Deep Learning - Senior
  • Patrick Cioata, SAIL - A Solution to the World's Plastic Problem - Intermediate
  • Albert Guo, Fraser Heights Secondary - Sleepy? Using a Neural Net to Catch Drowsy Drivers - Intermediate
  • Nathan Yeung, SAIL - Hyperfocus: A New Kind of Timer - Junior

 

Cai received four awards in the competition, including the Engineers & Geoscientists of BC Award, Innovate BC Young Innovator Scholarship and Michael Crooks Physics Prize. He and Yadav both won gold in the Engineering & Computing Sciences divisional category.

Semiahmoo Secondary's Heidi Burgert won three awards, including the BC Agriculture in the Classroom Award, Women in Engineering and Geoscience Award and silver in the Earth & Environmental Sciences divisional category.

SAIL's Charlie Zhang also took home three awards, including the BC Hydro Award, silver in the Engineering & Computing Sciences divisional category, and the Dr. J Bruce Neilson Memorial Award in the Special Awards category.
