Youth Transitions Fair returns Oct. 24 following pandemic hiatus

Transitions%20Fair.jpgThe Surrey Schools Youth Transition Fair is making a return following a hiatus during the pandemic, with more than a dozen organizations set to be on-hand to meet with families of Community Living BC-eligible and BASES students.

The fair is way for individuals with development disabilities and their families to learn about the support and services available as students transition out of school.

“These are agencies that would support individuals into adulthood and this fair is a key way for individuals and families to make those initial connections and begin thinking about what life may look like once they’re out of the school system,” said inclusive education helping teacher Greg England.

Because the fair did not take place in 2020 or 2021, England said there may be some catch-up needed for families who would have otherwise attended during those years.

“We’re excited to finally do this again and help families make the connections they’ll need,” he said.

Participating organizations include post-secondary institutions such Kwantlen Polytechnic University and Douglas College, as well as a variety of community organizations that offer programs to support  individuals with developmental disabilities. Programs often cover topics like employment search, assistance with developing social independence and navigating finances.

“These really are the supports that will help families with that bridge between adolescence and adulthood,” said England, who added this period can often be one of the most difficult times for families and individuals needing extra support. “The more we’re able to help build independence, the more doors that are opened for these individuals.”

BASES teachers and anyone else who may work with students needing similar support are welcome to attend the fair.

“It’s just a really great way to gather the information and helps families equip themselves with the information to do their due diligence, hopefully with plenty of time to plan what that transition will look like,” said England. “Sometimes families don’t think about this transition until their child is in their senior years, but we’re encouraging families to come early to begin thinking about that change sooner.

The Youth Transition Fair takes place Monday, Oct. 24 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. at the Surrey Schools Resource Education Centre, Room #304, 14123 92 Ave., Surrey.
