Supervision aides monitor play areas, classrooms, gyms, hallways and other school locations at lunch, ensuring students are safe during breaks. The part-time position sees aides work one hour per day at a rate of $22.65 per hour, with the flexibility to choose where and how often they would like to work.

“Supervision Aides are one of the most important roles in the district,” said Heidi Haywood, a district office clerk with Human Resources. “When they arrive at work, the teachers can go on their break knowing that the students are safe, principals can connect with students and teachers since they know supervisors are in place, and parents can relax knowing their children are safe.”

Haywood said many supervision aides are retirees, but the district has also found success with hiring post-secondary students, adding the work makes for a great addition to any college or university student’s resumé.

“It’s a great opportunity for post secondary students that want to work as outreach workers or Safe School Liaisons,” she said. “They get paid experience and interview with Safe Schools. And for post secondary students doing online classes, it’s the perfect job – they walk down the street to their neighbourhood elementary or secondary school during lunch break.”

Haywood said the district looks for candidates who have a calm demeanour and work well with children and youth, are able to communicate, and are reliable, patient, good listeners and respectful. The district provides supervision aides with training and support for their work, as well as a handbook with guidelines.

She also noted working as a supervision aide can lead to other employment opportunities with Surrey Schools, such as aides pursuing careers as education assistants or with school meal programs.

“We provide an opportunity for a lot of men and women to feel like they are contributing to their community,” she said. “We give them the confidence they need to apply and be successful in other jobs as well – many of my new hires become EAs or join the clerical team.”

Ultimately, Haywood said working as a supervision aide is rewarding, whether aides join because of a passion for working with children or to start a new career with the district.

“They love connecting with the students and helping the schools,” she said. “They are rewarded by the students every day – they truly make a difference in the lives of our students and staff.”
