Explore career & trades opportunities at free online info session Feb. 13
Surrey Schools’ Career Education department is inviting parents, caregivers and students to a free online information session on Tuesday, Feb. 13, featuring programs that provide career and skilled trades training opportunities to district students.
The automotive service technician program is just one district program that offers valuable hands-on experience to students interested in working in the automotive industry.
Titled An Evening of Discovery, the virtual session will highlight opportunities for Grade 12 students in the 2024-25 school year to complete post-secondary courses and a variety of career programs while still attending secondary school.
Many of the offerings are delivered in partnership with local post-secondary institutions, with the advantage of free tuition for their program or course, and both secondary and post-secondary credits for completing dual-credit courses.
“This information session is a chance for students and parents to really explore a wide variety of career training opportunities before graduation,” said Mark Flynn, principal of Career Education. “We’ve had a lot of success in past years with students finding career paths that they want to pursue and getting a head start through many of our programs.”
The district is now accepting applications for 20 district programs and six academic dual-credit courses running in the 2024-25 school year. The program and course offerings, with application deadlines, are as follows:
The construction craft worker program is a new addition to the Career Education offerings for students to explore potential career paths while still in secondary school.

“Many of the District Partnership programs have a skilled trades focus and enable students to begin technical training in a trade,” said Flynn. “Students who complete these programs often walk right out of the programs into a job and an apprenticeship. There is a real demand for skilled trades workers right now and companies are waiting for our students to graduate so they can be hired.”
An Evening of Discovery runs from 6:30-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 13. Those interested in attending must register for free on Eventbrite.
