💬 Welcome to the Home Economics Department!

Home Economics Education helps students to interpret and understand the world of family and work, and to identify and solve challenges that occur in their daily lives. The aim of the curriculum is to provide opportunities for students to develop knowledge, skills, and attitudes that have immediate and future applications in their personal and family lives, as well as in several key sectors of our local and global economies.

Graduation Requirements

All of our Grade 8 students receive an ADST rotation that includes a Home Economics component, and Grade 9 students are highly encouraged to take both an ADST and FINE ARTS course for their breadth of learning.  

For the graduation program, students are required to take an ADST or FINE ARTS course at the Grade 10, 11 or 12 level as part of their overall program. However, there are no SPECIFIC courses required. 

 Grade 8 

ADST Inquiry Design 8 (ADGE 8)

Try out exciting hands-on projects in areas like robotics, foods, textiles, metalwork, and woodwork while learning how creativity and design shape the world.

 Grade 9

Foods 9 (ADFS 9)

Level up your cooking skills as you create delicious meals, explore food systems, and design your own tasty solutions to real-world food challenges.

Foods & Textiles 9 (ADT 9)

Mix creativity and practicality as you design and sew unique projects and examine different food recipes while exploring global perspectives on fashion, food and sustainability.

Grade 10

Foods 10 (FOOD 10)

Discover your inner chef as you learn essential cooking techniques and explore what makes Canadian cuisine unique through hands-on kitchen experiences.

Foods & Textiles 10 (TXT 10 W/FOOD)

Combine your love of cooking and creativity as you whip up delicious dishes and design personalized sewing or craft projects that reflect your own style.

 Grade 11 

Foods 11 (FOOD 11)

Expand your culinary horizons by exploring international cuisines, global food issues, and cooking techniques that build confidence and creativity in the kitchen.

Textiles 11 (TXT 11)

Express your creativity through fabric and design as you create custom clothing, décor, and crafts while learning modern sewing and construction techniques.

Foods Leadership 11 (HEC 1B)

Gain leadership experience by planning and preparing real meals for school and community events while earning your FoodSafe Level 1 certification.

Psychology 11 (PSYC1A)

Explore the fascinating world of human thoughts, feelings, and behavior while learning practical strategies to build resilience, reduce stress, and strengthen relationships.\ Psychology 11 and Peer Counselling/Mediation 11 (PSYC1A and  IPS 1C)

Dive deeper into the study of human behavior while developing real-world skills in communication, empathy, and conflict resolution through hands-on peer counselling experiences.

Grade 12

Foods 12 (FOOD 12)

Take your culinary skills to the next level as you experiment with global flavors, explore dietary needs, and tackle food issues shaping our modern world.

Textiles 12 (TXT 12)

Design and create professional-quality garments and projects that showcase your creativity and craftsmanship while building an impressive personal portfolio.

Relationships and Caregiving 12 (CDAC 12)

Learn how healthy relationships grow and how to care for others by exploring communication, empathy, and child development in real-world contexts.

Foods Leadership 12 (HEC 2B)

Take charge in large-scale culinary events and fundraisers, develop advanced leadership and menu design skills, and work toward your Serving It Right certification.
