French Immersion

Developing Bilingual Learners

French Immersion provides students with opportunities to develop proficiency in both of Canada's official languages while building confidence, creativity, and intercultural understanding.

The French Immersion Helping Teachers support educators from Kindergarten to Grade 12 in providing rich language-learning experiences across all subject areas. Through classroom support, professional learning opportunities, and district-wide initiatives such as the French Film Festival and Festival des Beaux Arts, students engage with both the French language and Francophone culture in meaningful ways.

Key Principles

Literacy and Numeracy
Students develop literacy and numeracy skills while learning in French, building the communication, critical-thinking, and problem-solving competencies needed for success across all areas of learning.

First Peoples Principles of Learning
French Immersion learning experiences are guided by the First Peoples Principles of Learning, emphasizing relationships, community, culture, and experiential learning while valuing Indigenous perspectives and ways of knowing.

Cultural Engagement
Language learning extends beyond the classroom. Students are encouraged to participate in experiences that deepen their understanding and appreciation of Francophone communities and cultures.

What is French Immersion?

French Immersion is an intensive second-language program offered throughout British Columbia. Students learn in French while following the B.C. curriculum and developing proficiency in both of Canada's official languages. The program is open to learners of all linguistic backgrounds, and parents do not need to speak French to support their child's success.

French Immersion provides students with opportunities to:

  • Develop bilingual communication skills
  • Strengthen literacy and critical-thinking abilities
  • Build cultural understanding and appreciation
  • Access future educational and career opportunities
  • Connect with Canada's linguistic diversity

French Immersion Goals

The French Immersion program supports students in:

  1. Communicating confidently in both French and English.
  2. Developing an appreciation for Canada's official languages and cultures.
  3. Growing academically, socially, emotionally, physically, and creatively.
  4. Building respect for diverse cultures, perspectives, and experiences.
  5. Pursuing future educational and career pathways in one or both official languages.

French is one of Canada's two official languages and is spoken throughout the world, providing students with opportunities to connect with diverse communities and cultures.
