Communicating Student Learning (CSL)

Supporting Growth Through Assessment

Communicating Student Learning (CSL) is a learner-centred approach to assessment that recognizes learning as an ongoing process. Through feedback, reflection, and evidence of learning, students, teachers, and families develop a shared understanding of growth, achievement, and next steps.

Quality assessment practices are fair, transparent, equitable, and responsive, supporting student ownership of learning while strengthening communication between home and school.

Essential Elements of CSL

Learning Standards
Learning standards clarify what students are expected to know, understand, and be able to do. Success criteria help students monitor their progress and work toward achieving those standards.

Evidence of Learning
Evidence is gathered over time through:

  • Products such as assignments, projects, portfolios, and assessments
  • Conversations with students about their learning
  • Observations of learning in classroom and school contexts

This information helps teachers develop a comprehensive understanding of student growth and achievement.

Feedback and Communication
Students engage in self-assessment while receiving feedback from teachers and peers. Ongoing communication helps students and families understand strengths, areas of growth and next steps in learning.

The CSL Process

  • Identify Learning Standards that guide learning and assessment.
  • Design Learning Experiences that provide meaningful opportunities for students to demonstrate learning.
  • Gather Evidence of Learning through products, conversations, and observations.
  • Communicate Learning through feedback, reflection, conferences, and reporting.
