Principal's Message May 4-8th

Good morning Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary,

Happy month of May Panthers!  This is such an important and exciting time for learning and celebration at Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary.  With two months remaining in our school year, our students and staff are deeply engaged in their curricular and extra-curricular activities.  The beautiful weather is lifting spirits and energy and our school is moving forward with success and pride.  We are looking forward to the many special events that will occur over the coming weeks and the opportunity to recognize and celebrate a year of wonderful accomplishment.  Way to go Panthers, keep up the great work!

Last week I had the chance to drop by Mr. Wasmuth’s Electronics class to see the robots the students have built.  Their learning was so impressive with the coding, AI, design and construction required!  The robots were programmed to move items from one plane to another, and demonstrated careful construction, detailed programming and trial and error testing.   Much learning was on display and our students were highly engaged in the project.  We are very fortunate to be able to offer these amazing opportunities and highly valuable courses in Technology.

On Monday, Smiles to the World Club was back with another school spirit boosting activity.  Students were selling lemonade at lunchtime and our students appreciated the special treat.

Tuesday was Red Dress Day and a very important opportunity for our school to remember the more than 1000 missing or murdered Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQI+ people.  Special thanks to Ms. Truss, our Equity Department Head for your leadership in recognizing the day.

We also practiced our final Fire Drill of the year on Tuesday.  The weather was perfect and our students and staff were prepared and very well organized.   Great thanks to all Panthers for your work and cooperation in practicing this very important protocol.

On Wednesday, we brought our Grade 12 students together for an important and very meaningful presentation.   Our guest Markita Kaulius ICBC Road Safety Speaker gave an impactful presentation about the loss of her daughter Kassandra Kaulius. Thank you for your very powerful messages to our graduating class regarding safe driving and responsible decision making.  It is so important for us to stress safety and responsibility to our students at this time of year.

On Wednesday afternoon, our Senior Girls Soccer Team played against Earl Marriott Secondary and emerged with a hard fought victory!   Congratulations Panthers.

This morning, our Student Council introduced a brand new initiative - “Breakfast for Brains”.  They distributed morning breakfast snacks to help prepare students and energize them for the day.  I am always so impressed with the leadership and creativity of our students.  Thank you!

Traffic and Student Parking

All Panthers are reminded that traffic around the school and parking on school property will be very busy with our increased enrollment and Extended Day schedule.  All student drivers are reminded that it is very important to drive with care and attention while on or near school property.  Safety is our first priority.  Please drive safely and responsibly, be aware of pedestrians, and follow all traffic regulations.

If possible, all families are asked to consider alternative transportation options.  Please walk or bike to school if possible.  It would also be helpful if students are dropped off a couple of blocks away from the school and vehicles do not enter our school’s parking lot.

Note:  For the safety and privacy of our students, please avoid using the Elements Casino entrance as a designated drop-off/pick-up location.

Students are only permitted to park in the Student Lot on the right side of our parking lot near our Portable classrooms.  Students are not permitted to park in the Staff Lot.

All students wishing to park on school property must apply for a Parking pass.  Application forms may be picked up at the office.

Parking passes must be displayed on your car’s windshield at all times while on school property.  Parking privileges will be revoked for any students not following our parking regulations or for unsafe driving.

Thank you for your help and cooperation in responding to our increased traffic challenges and protecting the safety of our community members.
