Principal's Message January 12-16th

Good Thursday morning Panthers!

I hope all Panthers are enjoying your week and working hard toward successful completion of your 1st semester courses.   Our final week of classes and assessment is just around the corner.  Now is the time to focus on your studies, complete assignments, ask questions, make up missed work and thoroughly prepare for final assessments.  All students are reminded that we will again be offering 2 Semester Completion Days on January 26th and 27th.   These days are designed to provide students an opportunity to meet with your teachers for additional tutorial support, and completion of missing assessments/assignments.  Note:  Regular classes will not be in session on these two days.  Please reach out to your teachers now in order to schedule a time to meet with them.

It is now Basketball season.  We enjoyed hosting the very successful Firefighters Goodwill Games tournament last week, and this week we are participating in the longstanding Surrey Classic tournament.  Our Junior Boys team played against Holy Cross Secondary on Tuesday and emerged with the victory after a very close game.  Both teams played with great heart and discipline.  Way to go Panthers!

Our LTSS library is promoting Science Fiction month and celebrating reading! Check out our posters featuring our teachers and their favourite Science fiction! J   Students are encouraged to drop by our library and check out our collection of Science Fiction favourites.

This Monday and Tuesday, our Grade 10 students wrote their Literacy 10 Provincial Assessment.  This is a requirement for graduation.  Our Grade 12 students will be writing their Literacy 12 Provincial Assessment on January 26th or 27th.  Students are reminded to confirm your exam time on the posted schedules.

On Monday afternoon, we had the opportunity to meet with our Department Heads to discuss our semester-end and semester start-up systems.   As always, it is a busy time of the year… and much to coordinate.  Students and families are reminded that the first day of Semester #2 classes is on Wednesday, January 28th.  We will be running our regular Bell Schedule on this day.  Students are encouraged to log into MyEdBC to download your 2nd semester schedule.  Note: We will not be printing hard copies for students.  Please ask for help at the office if you are not able to log into your MyEdBC account.

Thursday is Black Excellence Day!  “Our Multicultural Team invites you to join us in celebrating the incredible achievements of Black leaders, creators, innovators, and trailblazers in every field – from science and sports to music and activism…  Wear a black shirt and check out the posters and Bulletin board on the 2nd floor highlighting inspiring Black individuals who are making a difference.”  Great thanks to the members of our Multicultural Club for your leadership in celebrating the day and promoting the importance of inclusion and diversity in our community.

On Thursday evening, our Dance Program will be showcasing their hard work and learning over the first semester.  Our student dancers will be performing for friends and family.   The evening promises to be a wonderful celebration of dedication, creativity and talent!  Congratulations to Ms. Okrainetz and all members of our Dance program!

Great thanks to our LTSS Environment Club!  It is wonderful to see community spirit in action.   You are making a difference and we appreciate your service and leadership at Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary.   Way to go Panthers!

Traffic and Student Parking

All Panthers are reminded that traffic around the school and parking on school property will be very busy with our increased enrollment and Extended Day schedule.  All student drivers are reminded that it is very important to drive with care and attention while on or near school property.  Safety is our first priority.  Please drive safely and responsibly, be aware of pedestrians, and follow all traffic regulations.

If possible, all families are asked to consider alternative transportation options.  Please walk or bike to school if possible.  It would also be helpful if students are dropped off a couple of blocks away from the school and vehicles do not enter our school’s parking lot.

Note:  For the safety and privacy of our students, please avoid using the Elements Casino entrance as a designated drop-off/pick-up location.

Students are only permitted to park in the Student Lot on the right side of our parking lot near our Portable classrooms.  Students are not permitted to park in the Staff Lot.

All students wishing to park on school property must apply for a Parking pass.  Application forms may be picked up at the office.

Parking passes must be displayed on your car’s windshield at all times while on school property.  Parking privileges will be revoked for any students not following our parking regulations or for unsafe driving.

Thank you for your help and cooperation in responding to our increased traffic challenges and protecting the safety of our community members.
