Principal's Message November 4-8th
This Week at Lord Tweedsmuir
Thursday November 7th, 2024
Good morning Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary.
It was another “interesting” start to our week with a Monday morning atmospheric river! Thank you to all students and staff for your commitment and perseverance as you navigated your way to school through the rain and wind. Despite the weather, we were able to start the day and week with our usual routines. Fortunately, our school did not lose power and our classes continued as scheduled.
We finished last week with Halloween celebrations on Thursday and Diwali on Friday. Our students enjoyed the fun and our school was full of spirit and smiles.
Our staff arrived in costume and demonstrated their school spirit at lunchtime!
Friday’s Diwali celebrations and activities were enjoyed by our students and staff! 😊 Special thanks to our South Asian Students and Allies Club for your leadership and work in hosting the day.
This week, Artona Photography has been onsite for Grad Photo appointments. Grade 12’s are reminded to make your appointment online at Artona.com.
This week I had the chance to drop by for a visit to our Metalwork shop. Our students are creating interesting projects and learning valuable skills every day.
I also had the chance to drop by to visit a new club in the school: “Smiles to the World”. This group of incredible students are writing letters of friendship and good wishes to seniors in our community. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of others. 😊
Tuesday was a very busy day with the sitting of the Grade 12 Literacy Provincial Assessments. All Grade 12 students are required to write this exam in order to graduate. I noted that our students were organized, prepared and wrote the exam with focus and intent. Well done to our senior class.
Wednesday was also a busy day. It was “Take Our Kids to Work Day” for our Grade 9 students and their family/friends. For many students, this was their first opportunity to participate in the “world of work”. A very valuable experience. Great thanks to all parents/family/friends who sponsored a student on Wednesday and to our Career Education Department for coordinating the day.
It was also Post-Secondary Day on Wednesday. We invited many Post-Secondary Institutes into the school to speak to our Grade 12 students. Students learned much information about the admission requirements, required grades, tuition costs, application procedures and much more from each of the schools. Again, a very valuable opportunity for our students. This “real world” information will certainly help to focus our students and motivate future educational goals. Great thanks to our Counselling team for your leadership in hosting this event.
Our Remembrance Day Assemblies were held today. The assemblies provided a very powerful and poignant message of the sacrifices of the members of our Armed Forces over the years. The importance of this sacrifice, our utmost gratitude for the peace we enjoy today and our deep thanks for the service provided to our nation were shared with students and staff. Thank you to all of our students for your solemn and respectful participation, and to all members of the organizing committee. We remember the fallen soldiers and those who continue to serve in the Canadian Armed Forces because their sacrifices have shaped and safeguarded our country. Those who gave their lives in battle paid the ultimate price for our freedom, and their legacy is a reminder of the courage and commitment to uphold peace. Lest we forget.
Tomorrow is Indigenous Veterans Day and an important day of remembrance that honours the contributions of First Nations, Metis and Inuit people who participated in Canada’s military efforts. This is an excellent Government of Canada resource that recognizes our Indigenous veterans and all they have sacrificed: https://www.veterans.gc.ca/en/remembrance/people-and-stories/indigenous-veterans
Students, parents/guardians are reminded that Friday, November 8th is a District-wide Professional Development Day. Schools across Surrey will not be in session. I wish all staff an excellent day of learning, and all students a good long weekend. Please note that Monday, November 11th is the Remembrance Day statutory holiday. School will not be in session. Please take some time to remember our veterans this weekend.
We will see all students and staff back at school on Tuesday morning.
All the best,
Ken
Traffic and Student Parking
All Panthers are reminded that traffic around the school and parking on school property will be very busy with our increased enrollment and Extended Day schedule. All student drivers are reminded that it is very important to drive with care and attention while on or near school property. Safety is our first priority. Please drive safely and responsibly, be aware of pedestrians, and follow all traffic regulations.
If possible, all families are asked to consider alternative transportation options. Please walk or bike to school if possible. It would also be helpful if students are dropped off a couple of blocks away from the school and vehicles do not enter our school’s parking lot.
Please note that this year, students are only permitted to park in the Student Lot on the right side of our parking lot near our Portable classrooms. Students are not permitted to park in the Staff Lot.
All students wishing to park on school property must apply for a Parking pass. Application forms may be picked up at the office. Students must park in their designated stall.
Parking passes must be displayed on your car’s windshield at all times while on school property. Parking privileges will be revoked for any students not following our parking regulations or for unsafe driving.
Thank you for your help and cooperation in responding to our increased traffic challenges and protecting the safety of our community members.
