Principal's Message June 3-7th

Happy Thursday Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary!

Good morning Panthers, I hope your week has gone well! 😊 We are now in the final push of the semester with students and teachers working very hard on their curricular goals, with completion of assignments and preparing for final exams/projects.  In addition to curriculum, the school is heavily involved in hosting numerous extra-curricular year-end celebrations of learning.  It is a busy and exciting time of the year.  Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary is thriving as we engage in learning with our students and guide and support our community.  Thank you to all Panthers for all of your efforts over this last phase of the 23/24 school year.

On Monday we returned to school for our Core Competency Week.  All students are required to set goals around their development of Communication, Thinking and Personal and Social Responsibility, and then reflect and report on their progress.  This goal setting and reflection cycle is now a graduation requirement.   Parent/Guardians are reminded to please ask your child about their goals.  They will have a Reflection assignment available to show you.  It can be found in their Surrey Schools email account.

On Monday evening our Dry Grad parent committee held their final meeting of the year and initiated Dry Grad 2025.  Great thanks to all members of this year’s committee for your dedication, time and effort to support this very important event.  We had over half of our Graduating class attend this year and we look forward to another excellent, safe and fun event for our Grads next year.  I look forward to working with next year’s committee!  Parents/guardians of senior students are highly encouraged to join us.   Please see the Dry Grad’s Facebook page for details. https://www.facebook.com/groups/ltssdrygrad2025

This week the Administration team has been very busy with the hiring of additional teachers for next year.  We anticipate that our enrollment will continue to increase and we will be introducing our newest staff to our community in the Fall.   As we all know, Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary will be a big, busy, dynamic and exciting learning community for our students and staff.

On a different note, this week was also the start of our school’s exterior painting/restoration project.  The crew started with power washing.  A big job to say the least.  Thank you to all members of our community for your care and attention as you navigate your way through our school grounds and parking lots and our crew and equipment.

On Tuesday evening, our Athletics Department hosted our annual Athletics Awards ceremony.  The evening was a great success with a very large turnout of students and parents. We enjoyed recognizing the many student-athletes, celebrating their accomplishments and coming together in school spirit.  Athletics plays a crucial role in the lives of so many of our students.   We are very grateful for the dedication and mentorship our teacher and community coaches provide our students.   We are also very thankful for the support provided by many of our students and families.  Without your assistance, it would not be possible to provide the many opportunities our students enjoy.  Congratulations Panthers!

On Wednesday, the District hosted our annual Indigenous Honouring Ceremony for our graduating students.  Several of our students and families attended this special event.  It was a wonderful opportunity to honour the achievements of our Indigenous students and their families.

This week, students in our Drama Department have been performing “The Outsiders” to audiences of proud family and friends.   Both cast and crew have worked very hard to bring the play to life.  Countless hours of hard work, talent, teamwork and dedication were required.   Great thanks to all members of the performance and congratulations on all you have accomplished! 😊

We will be hosting our final Grade 7 Tour tomorrow morning for Cloverdale Traditional School and Sunrise Ridge Elementary.  In addition to the important orientation information provided to the Grade 7 students, and the initial welcome into our Panther community, this initiative has provided an excellent opportunity for our Senior Leadership students to develop their skills.  I would like to acknowledge all of their hard work over the past several weeks.  Thank you for your leadership and mentorship for our incoming Panthers!  Well done everyone.

Friday will also be our final “Courageous Conversations” book club meeting for our  Anti-Racism teachers’ group.  Special thanks to Ms. Perez-Dingler for your leadership in initiating and hosting this valuable opportunity for our staff.

Have a great day tomorrow and enjoy your weekend.  See you on Monday!

Traffic Safety

Traffic safety around Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary is a critical priority for our community.  With increased enrollment, the number of vehicles navigating around and within our school grounds also increases.  It is essential that all drivers are very cautious while driving near the school and are aware of the many student pedestrians who are nearby.

All students and parents/guardians are requested to consider the following:

  • If possible, students - please walk and/or bike to school.  Fewer vehicles attempting to drop off and/or pick up students will be very helpful.
  • Consider dropping off/picking up 2-3 blocks away from the school and avoid the traffic congestion around the school.
  • Consider drop-off/pick up earlier and/or later in the morning/afternoons to avoid peak traffic times.

Thank you for your help in protecting the safety of our students.
