Guiding Principles: Home of the Eagles

At A.H.P. Matthew our guiding principles represent the soaring EAGLE. Excellence, Academics, Goals, Learning, Empathy and Safety. 

Excellence – take pride in your school work, strive to do your best, demonstrate great merit.

Academics – finish your work, do your best, practice what you learned, listen and follow teachers' directions, come prepared.

Goals – fulfilling your dreams, making a plan and then following through with it, expect more from yourself.

Learning – to gain knowledge and skill by studying, and then advancing through experience.

Empathy – understanding and respecting the beliefs and feelings of others.

Safety – beware of strangers, be careful on crosswalk zones, walk inside the school, stay in designated areas, use all equipment the way it was intended.

Our Code of Conduct and our Social Emotional Goal promotes these in all aspects of school life. 

Empathy - Understanding and respecting my own and others beliefs and feelings

  • I can recognize my own feelings and use strategies to handle difficult times.
  • I can make choices that keep myself and others happy, healthy, and safe.
  • I can understand that people have different ideas and beliefs.
  • I can explain why it's important to treat others the way I want to be treated. 

Articulate & Communicate - Understanding, connecting and effectively engaging with others

  • I can listen to others and take turns contributing ideas in conversations.
  • I can present my ideas clearly in an organized way. 
  • I can work with others to carry out a group goal.

Goals - Making a plan and then following through, setting higher expectations, fulfilling dreams

  • I can reflect on my learning, set goals, develop plans, and celebrate my growth.
  • I can develop and design different approaches and solutions.

Learning - Gaining knowledge and skill through inquiry and exploration, advancing through experience

  • I can get new ideas and build on others ideas to create new things.
  • I can explore and ask questions to pursue my curiosities.
  • I can learn from my mistakes. 

Effort - Taking pride in schoolwork, striving for greatness, building stamina and perseverance through risk taking

  • I can keep working with ideas, and sometimes it takes a few tries. 
  • I can ask for help when I need it.
  • I can try my best without having to always be the best. 

Social Responsibility - Taking responsibility, contributing and caring for the community and environment, building relationships and valuing diversity

  • I can show respect, kindness, and support to others.
  • I can appreciate others' ideas and stand up for what's right and fair.
  • I can use strategies to solve problems in peaceful ways. 
  • I can contribute to my community and care for my environment.
