Principal's Message September 25th

Hello Panthers!

I hope everyone is doing well and enjoying your first semester at Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary.  We are now settling into the regular school routines of the year.   Classes are finalized, curriculum is established, and learning is underway!  In addition, we have initiated many extra-curricular clubs for our students to engage in school-life, connect with friends and make a difference in our community.  Great thanks to all staff who volunteered to sponsor a club this year.  As always, our students are very fortunate to be members of Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary.  Way to go Panthers!

We finished last week with our annual Grade 8 Pancake Breakfast on Friday morning.  Thank you to Chef Roberts and his Culinary Arts students and our staff kitchen helpers for your very early morning and all your work in preparing a delicious breakfast for our students.  This year’s event was a great success with most of our grade 8 students joining us for good food, friendship and fun!

We hosted our monthly Staff meeting on Monday and had the opportunity to review our successes and challenges of this year’s school start-up and the many systems and initiatives in place to support learning.   September is always a very full and complicated time for schools, and we are very happy with the caring commitment of our staff, our students’ dedication to learning and service and our school’s culture of inclusion and pride.  Thank you to all Panthers for all you contribute to our community!

Tuesday evening brought us another wonderful LTSS culture building tradition.  We hosted the Awards Ceremony for our 24/25 student achievement.  Special thanks to the organizing committee for all your work in making this event possible.  Also, great thanks to the many families who joined us for the evening.  It was a very important chance to recognize our students and celebrate excellence in learning!  We are very proud of our Panthers.

Today, Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary participated in our annual Terry Fox Run.  Students in PHE classes throughout the day are running in memory of Terry Fox and raising awareness and funding for Cancer Research.  Thank you so much to all students and staff who have donated toward this very worthy cause.  Also, great thanks to our brave volunteers on staff who volunteered to be “pied” in the face to raise funds.

Tomorrow, Friday September 26th is Orange Shirt Day.  Teachers will be linking their curriculum to Truth and Reconciliation and special awareness and educational activities have been planned through our Student Council.   It promises to be a very important day of learning, awareness and reflection.  Thank you to all students and staff for your participation.

Friday evening brings back another fun culture-building event for our school with our Senior Boys Football Team’s “Friday Night Lights” game.  Good luck to the team and our entire football program on this special evening of team spirit and friendly competition.  All students, parents/guardians are reminded that this is a school sponsored event.  All school rules of the Code of Conduct are in place and to be respected. We are confident that this will be a positive, safe and fun evening for our school community.

Students and parents/guardians are reminded that Monday, September 29th is a Non-Instructional Day.  Regular classes will not be in session.  Our staff will be focussed on the topic of Racial Equity.   Tuesday, September 30th is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and is a statutory holiday with school not in session.  We will see students back at Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary in session on Wednesday, October 1st.

I wish everyone a weekend of rest, rejuvenation, reflection and learning.

Ken

Traffic and Student Parking

All Panthers are reminded that traffic around the school and parking on school property will be very busy with our increased enrollment and Extended Day schedule.  All student drivers are reminded that it is very important to drive with care and attention while on or near school property.  Safety is our top priority.  Please drive safely and responsibly, be aware of pedestrians, and follow all traffic regulations.

If possible, all families are asked to consider alternative transportation options.  Please walk or bike to school if possible.  It would also be helpful if students are dropped off a couple of blocks away from the school and vehicles do not enter our school’s parking lot.

Please note that this year, students are only permitted to park in the Student Lot on the right side of our parking lot near our Portable classrooms.  Students are not permitted to park in the Staff Lot.

All students wishing to park on school property must apply for a Parking pass.  Application forms may be picked up at the office.

Parking passes must be displayed on your car’s windshield at all times while on school property.  Parking privileges will be revoked for any students not following our parking regulations or for unsafe driving.

Thank you for your help and cooperation in responding to our increased traffic challenges and protecting the safety of our community members.
