Spring Reading 2026: Recommended reads for teens!

Good news – spring break isn’t over yet! And with a week or so left, we’re rounding out our Spring Reading series with some suggested books for secondary students to enjoy.
Our Grade 8 to 12 recommendations come from École Earl Marriott Secondary teacher-librarian Regen Schmidt – here are four books he thinks teens should read, and what they’re all about!
We Fell Apart by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
First off, this book cosmetically looks amazing! The sprayed coloured edges make this book very eye-catching. Number three in the We Were Liars series, the story parallels the previous stories while not focusing on just the Sinclair family. If you enjoy stories with great settings, be sure to give this book a chance as you visit hidden beaches, old castles and vineyards.
Mad Love: Harley Quinn by Paul Dini & Pat Cadigan
Beyond the love story of Harley Quinn and the infamous Joker character, Mad Love focuses solely on Harley and her upbringing. If you enjoy the spotlight on supporting cast members that don’t often get told, this unique narrative will deliver.
You Know Me Well by Nina Lacour & David Levithan
Following queer characters Mark and Kate as they traverse the awkward high school stages of romantic relationships, the reader observes their struggles to start new relationships and keep old ones relevant. Sitting next to each other in class but never talking finally ends and they discover they have so much in common. If you want to feel the comfort and ease of a good friendship among the turbulent waters of self exploration as a teenager, then this book is for you!
A Taste of Haida Gwaii by Susan Musgrave
If you enjoy stories with a beach setting or beachcombing, then look no further. At first glance, A Taste of Haida Gwaii appears as a delicious recipe book. Upon further reading, you’ll find studies of Octopus playing a Rubik’s Cube, tips on proper mushroom hunting and finding antique glass fishing floats along the shoreline. Beautiful pictures throughout!
There are lots of great books to choose for youth readers this spring! See also some primary reads recommended by Janice Churchill Elementary and Royal Heights Elementary teacher-librarian Lisa Matsumoto and intermediate reads suggested by Creekside Elementary teacher-librarian Kevin Pang.
Thanks for checking out our Spring Reading series!
