New to Surrey and looking to register your child with Surrey Schools? Here’s what you need to know

New%20to%20Surrey%20Schools.pngWelcome to the Surrey School District! If you’ve recently moved to the area or if your child is entering kindergarten, we can’t wait to get to know your family and have your student join our school community.

Surrey Schools is committed to providing equitable, diverse and inclusive work and learning environments that foster a sense of belonging for all students.  Surrey Schools is committed to including and lifting up the wisdom of the local Indigenous cultures, languages, and identities and making the First Peoples Principles of Learning evident and highlighted in classrooms, learning spaces, and workspaces.

In our efforts in equity, truth and reconciliation we are committed to making the registration as smooth as possible for you. The most important thing is getting your child in school!

If you would like assistance registering, you can contact or visit your neighbourhood school and staff will be happy to help.

How do I register my child in the Surrey School District?
You can register here or you can visit www.surreyschools.ca and click the ‘Register Today’ button in the top right. If you need assistance in a language other than English, staff at your local school can connect you with our Welcome Centre to assist.

Our website also includes a School Locator tool which can be used to identify your catchment school based on your home address.

What documents do I need to register?
We need a few official documents in order to get to know you.

  • First, a photo ID for the parent or guardian, like a driver's license, passport, BC Services Card, or BCID card.
  • Second, evidence of legal guardianship like  the child's birth certificate or other documentation like a landed immigrant document or guardianship order.
  • Third, evidence of the child’s birth date like a birth certificate or passport of the child.

In order to show the parent or guardian lives in B.C., we also need a valid government-issued document showing your address. This can be a BC Driver's License, BC Services Card, BCID card, or ICBC vehicle registration document.*

*If you don't have any of these documents, don't worry! There are many other options available to verify your name and address, like providing two pieces of mail. Your school will be happy to work with you to find a solution to get your child registered as quickly as possible.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

What grade will my child attend?
Our schools are configured into elementary schools for kindergarten to Grade 7, and secondary schools for Grades 8-12. Children who turn five-years-old before January 1, 2024 are eligible to begin kindergarten in September 2023.

If you are unsure what grade your child will be in, please see this chart.

Newcomers and English Language Learners:
If you are new to Canada and require registration, language or other support, the Surrey Schools Welcome Centre can help.

Our Welcome Centre offers programs and services throughout the year, including translation, settlement programs, English language and cultural assistance for families. Our teachers and school staff can connect you with the centre – just ask!
