OUR CONTEXT

Creekside Elementary officially opened in April of 1999, in a residential neighborhood in the City Center area of Surrey located on the traditional, unceded and shared territories of Coast Salish peoples: Katzie, Kwantlen and Semiahmoo First Nations. There are approximately 300 students enrolled in fourteen divisions, one of which is the District Intensive Literacy Program for students in Grades 4/5/6.

The parent community is supportive of the school and are actively involved in PAC and school events. Our staff works hard to provide our students with opportunities and experiences to enhance their literacy skills. For example, we had a reading event on Valentine’s Day for families to come into the classrooms to promote the "Love of Reading".  In our monthly newsletter, we share a word of the month to build vocabulary to support literacy. The school held a book fair this spring titled, On the High Seas, where books were the treasure. Another literacy event is Camp Read S’more . This event takes place in June and is a wrap up event of the year where the gym is transformed to a sky horizon with twinkling lights emulating a camping experience where families and their children read by flashlights.

Many of our families speak a language other than English at home.   Literacy is a fundamental life skill. It is the ability to read, write, and speak to communicate effectively with others and make sense of the world.

Our school goal is to develop and enhance literacy skills.

OUR FOCUS

Our Focus at Creekside is to develop literacy in order for all students to be able to fluently understand the English language in the areas of reading and writing. Our current data supports this goal.

  • To foster a love of reading and writing in all students by providing engaging, diverse, and age-appropriate literature, and by developing literacy skills through interactive and differentiated instruction. Our aim is to ensure every student becomes a confident, proficient reader and writer, capable of thinking critically and expressing themselves effectively."

  • To cultivate a community of enthusiastic readers and writers by integrating literacy across all subjects, encouraging collaborative learning, and supporting each student's unique journey towards literacy proficiency.

  • To create a dynamic and inclusive literacy environment where every student is encouraged to explore, question, and connect with texts, fostering a deep understanding and appreciation of the written word.

OUR NEXT STEPS

Primary Literacy Goal Statement

  • To ignite a love for reading and writing in our youngest learners by creating a supportive and stimulating environment where literacy is celebrated daily. We aim to provide a rich variety of age-appropriate books and materials that cater to diverse interests and backgrounds. Through playful and interactive activities, we will develop foundational literacy skills, including phonemic awareness, vocabulary, and comprehension. Our goal is to ensure every child feels confident and excited about their journey into the world of reading and writing, laying a strong foundation for lifelong learning

Intermediate Literacy Goal Statement

  • To advance literacy skills in intermediate students by fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of diverse texts. We aim to provide a balanced literacy program that includes guided reading, independent reading, and writing workshops. Our goal is to enhance students' critical thinking, comprehension, and analytical skills through exposure to various genres and complex texts. By integrating technology and collaborative projects, we will encourage students to engage actively with literature and develop their own voice as writers. We strive to create a supportive environment where every student feels empowered to explore, question, and connect with the written word, preparing them for future academic success and lifelong learning."
