Surrey Schools named one of Canada’s Greenest Employers for 2023
Surrey Schools has been named one of Canada’s Greenest Employers for a seventh time.
The designation was awarded to the district by the editors of the Canada’s Top 100 Employers project at Mediacorp Canada Inc., which recognizes companies and organizations across the country annually. Surrey Schools is among 89 top employers selected this year to receive the distinction.
"It is an honour to once again be recognized for our work in moving towards a greener future,” said Laurie Larsen, chair of the Surrey Board of Education. “We are proud of our team’s efforts to make a positive impact on the environment and hope that it will inspire future generations to do the same. This recognition motivates us to continue our sustainability journey and work towards a better world for all.”
For this year’s designation, the district was recognized for its forward-thinking environmental initiatives and inclusion of environmentally minded programs, such as school garden installations that are maintained by staff and students. The garden programs are a method of place-based, environmental education designed to help students learn about working together to share resources, knowledge, successes and challenges for promoting environmental practices.
Another initiative noted by the judges was Surrey Schools’ Rethink Waste program, which mirrors the municipal program designed to capture all recyclables such as household and car batteries, organics and e-waste. The program also includes waste diversion rates monitoring.
Surrey Schools was also among Canada’s Greenest Employers in 2022, 2021, 2020, 2019, 2017 and 2016. In February, Surrey Schools was also named one of BC’s Top Employers.
