Retirement 2021: Longtime PHE teacher Kim Eagle spreads her wings
If you took physical and health education in Cloverdale in the last three decades, you may well have met Kim Eagle.
Eagle is one of the past year's retirees from the Surrey School District after a 34-year career, predominantly teaching physical education at schools in the Cloverdale and Clayton Heights neighbourhoods. And it all started when she filled in for another teacher.
"I pursued a career in Surrey thanks to a friend working at Cloverdale Junior (now Martha Currie Elementary) who let me know a teacher was going on maternity leave," she said. "From there, I went to Lord Tweedsmuir, Clayton Heights and a short time at DEC as the PE and athletics helping teacher."
Over her time in the district, Eagle said she created many lasting memories with her students and coworkers - so many that it was hard to pick a favourite.
"I have loved coaching, working with elementary school teachers promoting physical education, meeting so many wonderful teachers, EAs and administrators," she said. "My best memory was meeting the love of my life at Lord Tweedsmuir!"
Though she will miss regularly seeing her colleagues, who she considers to be friends, she is excited to spend time with her family, improve her personal wellness and travel to some of the world's greatest sporting events, including the U.S. Open and the British Open. She also plans to work on her golf game.
While she's no longer at a school to mentor new hires, she said her advice to them is to get involved in extracurricular activities at their schools.
She also has a message to leave with her co-workers, as well as one for her students:
"Teachers, collaborate with others and enjoy the special moments with kids," she said. "Always maintain your integrity and be a risk taker.
"Students, take risks - failure is part of learning. And take advantage of everything school has to offer."
Congratulations on your retirement, Kim! Thank you for all your hard work in the district!
