‘twas the night before Christmas, and in every reading nook, each student was curled up with yet another good book!

We’re continuing our Winter Reading series with four recommendations for Grade 4 to 7 students from Coast Meridian Elementary teacher-librarian Roslyn Sundset. Here’s what’s on her list for pre-teens this winter break.

The Deep & Dark Blue by Niki Smith

After a dangerous takeover destroys their noble family, twins Hawke and Grayson are forced to flee and hide under new identities. They find safety with the Communion of Blue, a powerful group of magical women who can shape reality by weaving threads. In this graphic novel, expect to enjoy a rich fantasy story while learning about courage, choice and finding strength during times of change.

Alone by Megan E. Freeman

Maddie wakes up one morning and discovers her entire town is empty. Everyone is gone. With only her dog for company, she must figure out how to survive on her own. This book is exciting, a little scary and really hard to put down. You will learn about problem-solving, bravery and how strong you can be when things feel impossible.

Same Page by Elly Swartz

Bess Stein is running for Grade 6 class president with her new friend June, and together, they have big ideas, including a book vending machine for their school. When some of the books are challenged and Bess discovers that June’s mom is leading the effort, their friendship is suddenly tested. This thoughtful story explores standing up for the right to read, even when it means making a hard choice.

The Lonely Book by Meg Grehan

In Annie’s family bookshop, magical piles of books appear each day, always perfectly matched to the people who need them. But when one book is never chosen, the shop itself starts to feel sad and off-balance. This playful, book-loving story reminds us that stories connect us, and that even one forgotten book can matter a great deal.

There are lots of great books to choose from for intermediate readers this holiday season! See also some excellent primary reads from Theresa Clarke Elementary teacher-librarian Amber Young, and stay tuned for recommendations for secondary students in our Winter Reading series!
