Surrey Schools recognizes and thanks our 221 retirees!
Surrey Schools celebrated 221 retirees this past Tuesday at the district’s annual retirement dinner, paying tribute to those who retired in the 2025-2026 school year.
The group represented nearly every role in the district, including principals, teachers, clerks, education assistants, custodians and facilities staff. The Surrey Board of Education hosts the event each year to thank those who have spent their careers supporting students and school communities.
"Today is our chance to thank you, personally and from the bottom of our hearts, for all the years of hard work and care you've given our district," said Gary Tymoschuk, chair of the Surrey Board of Education.
The evening, held at the Resource Education Centre, began with a territorial acknowledgment from Deputy Supt. Andrew Holland. Diva Manchanda, a Grade 10 student at Enver Creek Secondary, spoke on behalf of the district's Student Voice group about the difference each of them has made in students' lives. She was followed by Tammy Murphy, president of CUPE 728; Amrit Sanghe, president of the Surrey Teachers' Association; and Zahara Rawji, president of the Surrey Principals' and Vice-Principals' Association, who each reflected on the impact the retirees have had in their schools and workplaces.
Guests were treated to renditions of classical favourites by SAXXY D, a talented jazz combo from Kwantlen Park Secondary made up of senior students.
Each retiree went home with a thank-you gift: either a bentwood box designed by shishálh First Nation artist Shain Niniwum Selápem Jackson of Spirit Works or a gift card to a local restaurant.
Congratulations to all of this year's retirees and thank you for everything you have done for Surrey Schools!
