Halloween at Senator Reid
Below you will find important information about Halloween at Senator Reid:
We are excited to have students and staff celebrate Halloween on Monday, October 31st by wearing costumes, participating in Halloween activities, and taking part in a costume parade. A reminder that all costumes must be appropriate for an elementary school setting. There are no toy weapons allowed at school (e.g., guns, knives, etc.) and please avoid unnecessary blood and gore. If you're unsure, feel free to email me with the details of the costume (taylor_patrick@surreyschools.ca).
Attached to this post, you will find a letter from Safe Schools outlining ways we can prevent the school and community from being vandalized.
For children and youth who have special needs, such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, children who have experienced trauma, or children who are new to Canada, Halloween can be difficult to comprehend and fear evoking. If you anticipate your child(ren) experiencing challenges, please consider the following:
- TRY TO STICK WITH NORMAL ROUTINES AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.
- REHEARSE. Pre-walk the route beforehand and practice social cues by rehearsing questions and answers children may hear on Halloween night, and going through trick-or-treating routines.
- TRY OUT THE COSTUME BEFORE THE BIG DAY/NIGHT.
- WORK AT THE CHILD’S LEVEL. If you anticipate that the child will be extremely anxious about seeing others in costumes, have them watch from a distance until they decide they want to engage.
- PARENTS, in preparation for the evening, prepare your child for unannounced visitors.
- PARENTS, ALLOW FOR SOME DOWN TIME BEFORE TRICK OR TREATING. Work some quiet time into the day to prepare, prior to the evening festivities.
- KEEP AN OPEN MIND ABOUT WHAT HALLOWEEN LOOKS LIKE FOR YOUR CHILD.
- DON’T FEEL BAD IF IT IS EASIER FOR A CHILD TO SIMPLY NOT PARTICIPATE IN ANY GIVEN YEAR.
Thank you for taking the time to familiarize yourself with our school expectations.
