Surrey School District and Indus Media Field Day
L.A. Matheson Secondary, has played a key role, both through teachers who have contributed their expertise to the project but also in bringing it into their classrooms and empowering students to move the project forward. Gurpreet Kaur Bains, Languages Department Head, has used the resource in her classes to bring elements of Punjabi culture, history and language to new heights. Annie Ohana, Aboriginal Department Head and Social Justice Curriculum Expert in the project, has added social justice understandings and intersectional connections that bring this project far beyond a south Asian dynamic. Both teachers have helped put together a volunteering corps that have helped with this project and will serve as student leaders in bringing this project to schools across the district.
The value of Indus Media Foundations' program and resources around Punjabi contributions goes far beyond a simple narrative from a minority group. What elevates it above and beyond another side story, sidebox, is its potential to empower the stories of others to unearth themselves from a dominant narrative that sees us sweep aside stories that hold equal merit and value. This resource allows teachers, community members, and veterans to be recognized in new ways, and to be empowered to put forth their stories. This process is never easy, it takes time, it takes resources (yes sometimes monetary ones), it takes passionate individuals willing to stand up and be heard, even when it disrupts the major story so long seen as the only truth. The fact that this can be a main part of our curriculum is a true game changer, and will lead to so many benefits that see the true value and understanding of diversity.
