Procedure 6515.1 - Application of Pesticides, Herbicides, or Insecticides to Buildings or Grounds


1. Alternative and preventable measures will be fully explored before consideration is given to the use of pesticides or insecticides.
2. When alternative measures will not suffice and health and safety concerns have been identified and it is deemed appropriate to utilize pesticides or insecticides, the Director of Physical Plant or his designee, before commencing action, shall ensure that:
a) The assistant superintendent for the school and the secretary-treasurer have authorized the application of pesticides or insecticides.
b) The school principal or supervisor of the facility concerned is given prior advice of application plans, and ensures that information of such plans is communicated as appropriate.
c) Application is carried out under the supervision of the holder of a valid B.C. Pesticide Applicator’s Certificate or equivalent certification acceptable to the regulatory bodies concerned.
d) Application is carried out in accordance with the requirements of regulatory bodies concerned and the instructions of the manufacturer(s) of the substance(s) employed.
e) A follow-up check is made with the principal or supervisor.
3. Cosmetic use of herbicides is not allowed under any circumstances.
