WalkingWednesdays brings a variety of community agencies together to work with the school to positively engage students and parents on the importance of using an alternative mode of transportation to school other than driving, such as walking, scooting, biking or other.

Not only does this greatly reduce traffic congestion in the school zone improving safety, but it also increases ones physical activity for overall health and wellness while also reducing fuel emissions with less cars idling in the zone. With less vehicles and congestion in the drop off and pick up zone will also result in less driver frustration and ultimately reduced illegal stopping/parking, illegal U-turns, decreased conflicts and so on.

Students have all received a passport to track their walking to school for the remaining Wednesdays in May. Walking can also include biking, scooting, skateboarding, and basically anything other than arriving to school in a car.

For students that absolutely have to drive to school, we encourage parents to park a few blocks from the school and walk with their child the few blocks to school to earn then a “tick” in their passports. Police, volunteers, ICBC, bylaws, teachers will initial the student’s passports during the drop off time.

The classroom with the greatest number of participation checks (based on the signed passports) for both intermediate and primary grades, will win a pizza lunch complimentary by ICBC. As an appreciation gesture, ICBC will also offer a hot beverage station for parents/caregivers.

Looking forward to seeing a BIG reduction in traffic on Wednesdays (and all days) this month.
