FSA Information for Grade 4 and 7 Students

Grade 4 and 7 Families,

I am posting this to share some information on the FSA (Foundation Skills Assessment) test.

The Foundation Skills Assessment is an annual province-wide assessment of all B.C. students’ academic skills in grades 4 and 7, and provides parents, teachers, schools, school districts and the ministry with information on how the students are progressing in the foundation skills of Literacy and Numeracy.

Some families have chosen to send in an exemption form asking that their child not write the test.  As this is a provincial assessment there are only specific circumstances where a student may be granted exemption.

The specific circumstances include:

  • Students with Documented Learning Needs: This is for students who have documented learning needs outlined in their Individual Education Plans (IEPs) that prevent them from participating in the test.
  • English Language Learners (ELL Students): This may apply to English Language Learners who have insufficient language proficiency to understand and respond to the exam questions effectively.
  • Extenuating Circumstances: In cases of family emergencies, prolonged illness, or similar extenuating circumstances, students may be excused from taking the exam.

If your child does not fall into any of these predefined categories, they do not qualify for an exemption so they will be writing this assessment with the rest of their class.

If there is an extenuating circumstance that we are not aware of please let us know.

We will work with the students to ensure they are well supported through this process.  If you have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us.  Thank you.
