Twenty-three ensembles from Surrey Schools and beyond put on amazing performances last week during the Grade 9 to 12 Concert Band Revue at the Bell Performing Arts Centre, an annual non-competitive showcase of musical talent for secondary students.
More than 1,100 students from 16 secondary schools performed last Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for an adjudicator, as well as audiences of parents and staff. The revue featured music from students at Clayton Heights, Enver Creek, Fleetwood Park, Frank Hurt, Fraser Heights, Grandview Heights, Guildford Park, Johnston Heights, École Kwantlen Park, L.A. Matheson, North Surrey, École Panorama Ridge, Princess Margaret, École Salish, Sullivan Heights and Tamanawis secondary schools.
This year’s performances were adjudicated by Dr. Meijun Chen, Director of Concert Winds with the UBC School of Music, and Doug Macaulay, Principal Conductor and Program Director of the West Vancouver Youth Band.
Chen is an award-winning, world-renowned clarinetist who has received such prestigious accolades as the CBDNA Mike Moss Diversity Conducting Study Grant and the Johann Strauss Foundation Music Award.
Macaulay has four decades of experience as an arranger, producer, conductor and award-winning composer, recognized twice with the BC Music Educators’ Distinguished Service Award.
Both shared valuable insight and critiques after each performance at the Concert Band Revue.
