AP 106 - Conduct of Schools
Background
In accordance with sections 76(1) and (2) of the School Act, the Board of Education of School District No. 36 (Surrey) affirms all schools will be conducted on strictly secular and non-sectarian principles. In addition, the highest morality must be inculcated, but no religious dogma or creed is to be taught in a school.
Definitions
“Secular” refers to temporal, not overtly religious.
“Non-Sectarian Principles” refers to not adhering to a distinctive doctrine.
“Religious Dogma” refers to an established religious opinion or a religious opinion put forward without adequate grounds.
“Religious Creed” refers to fundamental religious beliefs.
Procedures
| 1. | The teaching of religious doctrine associated with any faith or tradition is not allowed (except in a context which is intended to educate students generally about the various religious traditions for the purpose of advancing religious tolerance and understanding and does not advance any particular doctrinal position over others). |
