2022 Surrey Schools International Jazz Festival winners announced

The Grandview Heights Secondary senior jazz band performs at the 2022 Surrey Schools International Jazz Festival. Grandview Heights Secondary made its debut at the jazz festival, with students taking home three awards.

The award winners and scholarship recipients have been announced for this year's Surrey Schools International Jazz Festival, with more than 20 students taking home individual accolades.

Semiahmoo Secondary students cleaned house, winning 11 individual awards in both the junior and senior jazz band categories. The Semiahmoo Grade 10 Jazz Band also won Outstanding Performance in the Rhythm Section and Junior Jazz Band categories, as did the Semiahmoo Grade 12 Jazz Band in the Senior Jazz Band categories.

In their jazz fest debut, Grandview Heights Secondary students took home three awards, including Outstanding Performance in Auxiliary Percussion in the Junior and Junior/Senior categories and Outstanding Performance by a Bass Player in Junior/Senior Jazz Band.

Students from Guildford Park Secondary, L.A. Matheson Secondary, Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary and Panorama Ridge Secondary and Fleetwood Park Secondary also won individual awards.

For jazz combos, Guildford Park and Johnston Heights together took home Outstanding Performance by a Junior Jazz Combo, while the Semiahmoo Grade 12 Trio won Outstanding Performance by a Senior Jazz Combo.

Semiahmoo Secondary Grade 12 student Michael Lin received a $500 entrance scholarship for Vancouver Community College's diploma program, in addition to winning Outstanding Performance by a Piano Player in Senior Jazz Band.

Frank Hurt Secondary's Bridgit Robinson received $500 from Affinity Group Tours to put towards music enrichment, and also won Outstanding Performance by a Piano Player in Junior/Senior Jazz Band.

Elgin Park Secondary's Alan Wong received $500 from Peninsula Arts Foundation, an award in memory of South Surrey band teacher Lorna Graham, while also winning Outstanding Performance in Auxiliary Percussion in Senior Jazz Band.
