Thirty-two ensembles from Surrey Schools and beyond put on amazing performances last week during the Grade 9 to 12 Concert Band Revue at the Bell Performing Arts Centre, an annual non-competitive showcase of musical talent for secondary students.

More than 1,400 students from 15 secondary schools performed last Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for an adjudicator, as well as audiences of parents and staff. The revue featured music from students at Enver Creek, Fleetwood Park, Frank Hurt, Fraser Heights, Grandview Heights, Guildford Park, Johnston Heights, Kwantlen Park, Lord Tweedsmuir, North Surrey, École Panorama Ridge, Princess Margaret, École Salish, Sullivan Heights and Tamanawis secondary schools.

This year’s performances were adjudicated by Meijun Chen, Director of Concert Winds with the UBC School of Music and an award-winning, world-renowned clarinetist, most recently receiving the 2024 CBDNA Mike Moss Diversity Conducting Study Grant and the 2023 Johann Strauss Foundation Music Award. Currently pursuing her Doctor of Music Degree in Wind Band Conducting at the University of Alberta, Chen is an active guest conductor at the university and shared valuable insight and critiques after each performance at the Concert Band Revue.

Looking ahead to the new year, the district will be hosting many more music and performance events at the Bell Performing Arts Centre before the end of the 2024-25 school year, including:
