And the winner is…: 2024 Surrey Schools International Jazz Festival award recipients announced
The Semiahmoo Secondary Grade 12 Jazz Band received the award for Outstanding Performance by a Rhythm Section in the Senior Jazz Band category at this year's Surrey Schools International Jazz Festival. Semiahmoo Secondary students took home 10 awards and two scholarships.
Award winners and scholarship recipients from this year’s Surrey Schools International Jazz Festival have been announced, with 17 district students taking home individual accolades and four school bands receiving awards.
Semiahmoo Secondary students had a strong showing, collecting seven individual awards in the junior and senior jazz band categories. The Semiahmoo Grade 10 and 12 jazz bands each received Outstanding Performance in the Rhythm Section, with the Grade 10s also receiving Outstanding Performance by a Junior Jazz Band.
École Salish Secondary had the second-most awards with five, including Outstanding Performance in the Rhythm Section, Lead Trumpet Player and Drummer junior/senior jazz band categories, and two students receiving recognition in the Guitar Player category for junior jazz band.
Students from Fleetwood Park Secondary, Grandview Heights Secondary and Guildford Park Secondary also won individual awards.
École Salish student Oliver LaPorte and Semiahmoo student Sophie Segismundo – who won awards for Outstanding Performance by a Drummer and Bass Player, respectively – each received $590 full tuition scholarships to the VSO School of Music Summer Jazz Workshops. Semiahmoo student Terry Hou, who also won an award for Outstanding Performance by a Musician, received a $500 scholarship from the Peninsula Arts Foundation.
