Mental health videos provide support to students of all ages & their families

With the school year well underway, students may be feeling a range of emotions – from overwhelmed to confused or stressed – in their school or personal lives.

The district is once again sharing its animated series of mental health videos, offering insight and support to elementary and secondary students and their families who may need it.

Last spring, Surrey Schools created a new series of mental heath videos to support students, with each video translated into multiple languages, and available in versions appropriate for elementary and secondary-level students.

The series covers six themes which were identified by district counsellors and school psychologists as common issues that children and teens face in their academic, social and emotional growth.

Navigating Life Changes

Major life changes such as moving to a new school, losing a loved one, growing apart from friends or experiencing parents divorce can cause overwhelming feelings that are hard to manage for students. This video recognizes the various health impacts from such emotional experiences.

Digital Stress

Technology can affect our minds and bodies, and it’s important to find a balance with your physical and mental well-being when using social media. Smartphones are powerful tools and it’s important not to let them take over our lives.

Healthy vs. Unhealthy Stress

There are different types of stress, some that are OK and others that aren’t. This video explains what makes one type of stress healthy and another unhealthy, as well as positive strategies to manage harmful stress.

Health and Wellness

Elementary: English | French | Punjabi | Mandarin | Arabic
Secondary: English | French | Punjabi | Mandarin | Arabic

Mental and physical wellness go hand in hand. Your physical well-being can also impact your mental health, and this video explains how to take steps – big or small – to improve how you feel inside and out.

Healthy Relationships

Elementary: English | French | Punjabi | Mandarin | Arabic
Secondary: English | French | Punjabi | Mandarin | Arabic

As social creatures, it’s important for us to build positive relationships with the people in our lives. This video describes what healthy relationships and friendships look like for youth and kids.

Body Image

Elementary: English | French | Punjabi | Mandarin | Arabic
Secondary: English | French | Punjabi | Mandarin | Arabic

The way we view ourselves has an effect on our health. Body image can be positive or negative and can influence our self esteem. This video includes ways to maintain a positive attitude about body image.

It’s important to remember that students and families are never alone in their challenges. We encourage you to watch, share and discuss these videos, and reach out to your school counsellor, teacher, principal or other trusted adult if you need further assistance.

The video series was developed in partnership with Fraser Health and the Ministry of Education and Child Care, which provided financial support for the project. They complement two previous mental health videos, You Are Not Alone and Coping with Stress & Anxiety.
