Surrey students recognized by VSO for community and school contributions
Seventeen Surrey and White Rock students have been recognized by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (VSO) as part of this year’s Höing Awards, each receiving $1,000 for their school’s music department.
The Höing Awards were created in 2018, thanks to an endowment by long-time VSO supporters Werner and Helga Höing, to support Surrey students who demonstrate excellence in music, school leadership and community involvement.
For the 2022-2023 VSO season the following Surrey students were recognized:

- Tanisha Janda - Tamanawis Secondary
- Brandon Chatta - Semiahmoo Secondary
- Kassidy Main-Cooper - Elgin Park Secondary
- Juliana Lucas - Johnston Heights Secondary
- Jacob Visser - L.A. Matheson Secondary School
- Julianne Billings - Sullivan Heights Secondary
- Karissa Tang - Grandview Heights Secondary
- Jayden Bayer - Ecole Salish Secondary
- Ethan Chiu - North Surrey Secondary School
- Sahil Sanghera - Frank Hurt Secondary
- Kathy Lehn - Guilford Park Secondary
- Christian Goncalves - Earl Marriott

“The VSO is dedicated to supporting music education in Surrey and continuing to develop a deep presence in the Surrey community,” said Ava Shadmani, education manager for the VSO. “The Höing Awards are an opportunity to collaborate with Surrey teachers in recognizing and celebrating music students who are making exceptional contributions to their schools and community.”
