School’s out for spring break, and with two weeks off, it’s a great time for students to enjoy a little reading with some fun book ideas for younger kids!

We’re starting our Spring Reading series with several recommendations from Senator Reid Elementary teacher-librarian Lesley Johnson for kindergarten to Grade 3-level readers. Here’s what’s on her list for younger students this spring break:

Drawn Together by Minh Lê & Dan Santat

Exciting illustrations show how a grandson and grandpa bridge an awkward language difference through their shared love of drawing superheroes and magical beings. Together they create a thrilling story of a boy wizard and a Thai Warrior defeating a huge dragon — no words needed!

The Girl and the Wolf by Katherena Vermette & Julie Flett

A little girl runs too far away from her mother and is lost in the woods, where it is quiet and dark. A grey wolf appears and asks her questions that help her to think calmly so she can find berries to eat, water to drink, and then find her way back to her family. The girl leaves a gift to thank the wolf for its help.

The Many Colors of Harpreet Singh by Supriya Kelkar & Alea Marley

Harpreet loves wearing a different coloured patka for every feeling — yellow for happy, pink for celebrating, red for courage. When his family moves far away from the home he knows, to a cold wintery place and a new school, Harpreet wears only plain white — for shyness and sadness. Then he finds a sunny orange woollen toque in the snow, and when he gives it back to the friendly girl in his class, every colour seems possible again!

Sometimes I Feel Like a Fox by Danielle Daniel

The author presents for children an exploration of feelings and character traits in the familiar forms of North American animals. Young readers will enjoy the drawings of animal-human masks and ask themselves, “Am I brave like a bear? Loving like a deer? Clever like a fox? And which traits will help my family?”

There are lots of great books to choose from for primary readers this spring! Stay tuned for recommendations for intermediate and secondary students in our Spring Reading series!
