Semiahmoo Secondary takes 2018 Surrey Fire Fighters Senior Girls Goodwill Basketball title
Semiahmoo Secondary's senior girls squad (above) emerged victorious from the Surrey Fire Fighters' Senior Girls High School Basketball Classic.
The 17th-annual tournament wrapped up Saturday (Jan. 13), after five days of competition involving almost every secondary school in Surrey.
A favourite headed into the tournament, Semiahmoo appeared unstoppable, handily defeating Holy Cross and Sullivan Heights in the quarter- and semi-finals before tipping off against Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary team on their home court for the championship game. After a hard-fought battle, Semiahmoo came out on top with a 76-62 win.
The win marked the first time the Semiahmoo girls have made it to the podium in the Axe Division since 2008, when they earned third place.
Lord Tweedsmuir also had a strong tournament, beating Southridge 86-32 in the semi-final before falling to Semiahmoo in the final. The Panthers made it to the final last year as well, when Panorama Ridge won the title.
The Fleetwood Park Dragons won in the Ladder Division, while Kwantlen Park placed second.
