Have a spooky, and safe, Halloween at school!

safe-halloween-celebrations.pngThe leaves are turning, and that means Halloween is just around the corner!

We're a few weeks away from tricks and treats, and just like last year, the district has health and safety measures and recommendations to make sure Halloween celebrations at school are Covid-safe.

Halloween costumes can be worn safely in classrooms, but families should check in with their classroom teachers to see if they are permitted in your child's class.

If costumes are allowed, students are reminded not to touch each other's costumes - no matter how amazing they are - and to not bring accessories to school that can be passed around. Students must continue wearing non-medical face masks as required, though to ensure breathability, costume masks (if your schools permits them) should not be worn over non-medical masks or face coverings.

For classes that will be distributing treats, a teacher or staff member will be designated to hand out sealed, pre-packaged goodies (no homemade treats, even if individually sealed) using methods that minimize contact and maximize physical distancing. Bonus points if teachers can integrate physical distancing into their costumes!

If possible, goodies will be distributed outside, and staff will follow proper hand hygiene procedures before and after handing out treats. As usual, students are encouraged to wash their hands regularly and keep their hands to themselves. High-touch surfaces like doorknobs and handrails will be cleaned and disinfected frequently.

There are still a lot of creative, fun and safe activities approved for classes. Here are some ideas:

Outdoor Fall/Halloween Scavenger Hunt: Look for dry leaves, creepy twigs and other materials for art projects or assignments geared towards subjects like math and art. Students can search individually or in small groups.

Goodie Launcher: Share a picture of a candy launcher made of Lego to spark curiosity for STEM and inquiry! Then let students build their own goodie launcher and test it outside.

Gallery Walk: Have students decorate the windows of their classrooms, then let classes walk the perimeter of the school to see everybody's artistic endeavors!

Costume Parade: Students can still safely show off their Halloween costumes, so long as parades are done outdoors and classes can be separated from each other. Take your costumes to the field and put them on display!
