The West Coast Kids Cancer Foundation (WCK) is once again partnering with Surrey Schools to offer City Camp this July, a free day camp for children age five (turning six by Dec. 31) to 12 living with or beyond cancer or blood disorders and their siblings, as well as bereaved siblings.

Spots are currently available for the weeks of July 5, 11 and 18, with the week-long sessions provided at no cost to families. The camp will run out of Simon Cunningham Elementary, located near Surrey Memorial Hospital, so kids can attend around treatment schedules if required. Two registered nurses will also be on site at all times to attend to medical needs.

“We are so pleased to partner with the West Coast Kids Cancer Foundation to offer this free day camp in our district,” said Laurie Larsen, Chair of the Surrey Board of Education. “This camp provides an opportunity for children with cancer or blood disorders to safely enjoy summer fun with their peers, while providing parents and guardians with the security of knowing their child’s unique medical needs will be supported.”

WCK City Camp is the only day camp in B.C. for kids with cancer or blood disorders, and is inclusive of children with all abilities and in all stages of their treatment plan.

Many kids undergoing medical treatment are unable to attend overnight camp, and not all families are comfortable sending their kids away overnight. City Camp give kids the chance to experience the magic of summer camp while being able to sleep in their own bed at night.

WCK City Camp runs Monday to Friday at Simon Cunningham Elementary (9380 140 St.) on the following dates and times:

  • Session 1: July 5-8, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Session 2: July 11-15, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Session 3: July 18-22, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

WCK also offers a virtual camp for children who are in the hospital or cannot attend City Camp in person. Virtual camp will run every day that camp is in session and will provide kids with four daily drop-in sessions full of crafts, fun, games, laughter and connection.
