Seven Surrey students medal at Canada Wide Science Fair

All seven of the district’s Surrey Academy of Innovative Learning (SAIL) students who advanced to nationals took home awards at this year’s Canada Wide Science Fair, a national STEM fair that promotes learning and innovations for Grade 7-12 students.
Ziyun (Emily) Lin and Ruiyi Sang took junior gold for Writing a cleaner future with E-Coal, making use of old toner powder to make crayons. Their project also received the Youth Can Innovate Award and Challenge Award.
Nathan Yeung and Charlie Zhang won the intermediate silver medal for Lento, designing a goal-based productivity app that helps users focus and limits distractions such as other apps and websites.
Farhan Ahmed and Alexander Li received intermediate bronze for The Methane Recycler, an attachment to modify existing gas furnaces that takes the byproduct of burned methane and uses electricity to turn it back into gas, then feeds the recycled methane back into the furnace.
Margo Senchenko took junior bronze for the Attractive Cat Scratcher, a catnip-infused scratching board that can be used to entertain cats and keep them from scratching furniture.
Congratulations to our SAIL students for their impressive showing at the Canada Wide Science Fair!
