Racial Equity

Racial equity is the principle that no individual should face barriers, exclusion, or discrimination based on their race or ethnic background. Racial equity initiatives are necessary because racism and discrimination continue to create unequal educational experiences and outcomes for students from historically marginalized groups. 

To deliver better outcomes for everyone, Surrey Schools works towards racial equity by attempting to address root causes that lead to inequitable outcomes, including addressing policies, curriculum, programs, and supports that create, or further existing inequities

The Research and Evaluation Department, in collaboration with the Racial Equity Department, has worked on multiple projects to support the overall strategic plan set forth by the Surrey Board of Education. As a part of the district's 5-year Racial Equity Strategic Plan (2023-2028), we have focused on projects geared towards students, teachers, and the broader community. Initiatives RESE actively supports include the piloting of the Weaving Threads Framework by gathering teacher reflections and insights on culturally responsive instruction, and supporting student equity teams as part of the Youth as Changemakers Initiative. The Research and Evaluation Department also supports the Racial Equity Department in its development and administration of the district-wide racial equity student survey.
