Surrey Schools is launching a new series of workshops focused on creating safe and caring spaces for youth, starting with a session on Jan. 18 from 6-8 p.m. at Tamanawis Secondary.

Following input from last month’s community consultation, the district worked with Options Community Services to design workshops that address many of the questions brought forward by the community in December. The sessions are intended to assist students and their families in accessing available resources to support their safety and well-being, and establish the appropriate community connections.

“We received great feedback from the Newton community that has guided our work to ensure families get the most out of this series,” said Laurie Larsen, Chair of the Surrey Board of Education. “We want our parents and students to leave each session feeling supported in our efforts to improve the safety of our communities.”

The first session will cover:

  • Programs and supports offered by the Surrey School District and the City of Surrey
  • Community resources and how to access them
  • Information for supporting safe schools and communities
  • Strategies for having open dialogue with youth and bridging generational gaps

Parents and community members are encouraged to attend, ask questions and share ideas for future workshops. The session is free and will be offered in English and Punjabi.

Anyone who would like to attend can register here. While registration is not required, it does support the district in ensuring we can accommodate all attendees.

Details for the session are as follows:

When: Wednesday, Jan. 18, 6-8 p.m.

Where: Tamanawis Secondary, 12600 66 Ave.

We hope you are able to attend. Any questions or concerns about these workshops can be shared with our Safe Schools Department at safe-office@surreyschools.ca
