Creative U is an after school adapted expressive arts program for children in grades 1-7 with an intellectual or cognitive disability. The program is designed to promote social skills and foster a creative space for self-expression.
In partnership with the After School Sport and Arts Initiative, Creative U is hosted out of an elementary school and through collaboration with school principals and Surrey School's Education Services department. The host school identifies and invites the participants. Siblings or a friend have opportunity to participate in the program upon referral from the school.
Creative U promotes lifelong learning and opportunities for children to creatively express themselves. The program helps them to develop positive relationships with peers, have a supportive environment to creatively express themselves and explore their creativity through a variety of mediums. It fosters greater self-confidence and creates a safe environment for children with intellectual disabilities to connect with peers, high school volunteers and positive adult role models. Ths program furthers awareness of community based programs and services related to the arts.
Currently located in four elementary schools, Creative U supports 40 students. The program runs once a week from 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. for eight weeks in two seasons, fall and spring.
