Surrey Blended: Elementary Transition Program

On August 26th, the Surrey School District shared its plans to safely return to in-class instruction. These plans reflect the measures put forth by provincial health experts and the Ministry of Education and include the important steps our schools will take to safely welcome our students back in September.

We are confident in our plans, but we know that many of our families are nervous. In response to parent feedback and concerns, we will be offering an Elementary Transition Program that will available to all families who are not ready to have their child return to full-time face-to-face instruction when school begins in September.

What is the Elementary Transition Program?

This program will support families with the intent of a gradual transition back to full time in-class instruction by January 2021. This blended learning option is a combination of online and face-to-face learning through your local school, with a goal of gradually increasing face-to-face instruction.

Students will be grouped by enrolment in a supportive educational structure or class, but parents should expect that students will be in multi-age groupings and possibly multi-school groupings.

Will my child still be in their neighborhood school?

Yes. Your child will still be enrolled in their neighborhood school.

What will the program entail?

  • Online Learning: Students will have targeted and required online learning everyday. Teachers will support this learning through a variety of methods and strategies.
  • In-class Learning: Students will be in class with their cohort for face-to-face learning which will focus on social and emotional learning and core competencies which are foundational to all learning. In-class learning will initially take place one afternoon per week and will gradually increase to two and three afternoons per week.
  • Teacher Collaboration Time: Teachers will have opportunities to work with their colleagues across the district to share best practices and develop resources and materials to support a quality blended program.
  • Parent Support: Parents will have time to connect with teachers to learn tips, practical advice and methods to help enable them to support their children at home.

What is expected of parents in this model?

In this model, students will spend the majority of their time at home, so parents will need to dedicate substantial time for support and guidance.
